8 Mistakes I Made While Traveling
I have planned so many spontaneous trips in my life. Yes, they ended up well but if you don't have the skills to plan everything spontaneously, then please don't do it. I wouldn't want you to be stuck in the middle of an island without being prepared enough. Spontaneity is fun and I know this based on real personal experiences but being stuck in another city/country without having so much plan regarding safety and preparedness can be dangerous too. I made this mistake a few times but I don't regret it.
2. Forgetting My Neck Supporter
So I decided to have a weekend trip alone to Berlin, then to Frankfurt, then back to Essen so I would spend over 14 hours in the train within 2 days. The night before the trip, I was out with friends so I basically had no sleep and I wanted to just doit in the train, but when I was in it, I realized that I left my neck supporter and I can barely sleep in a train without it. I arrived in Berlin in the afternoon and I was super tired, so I didn't last too long during the day and just headed to the hotel at around 10 PM to finally get some sleep.
3. Leaving Home 2 Hours Before My Flight
Düsseldorf Airport is about an hour away from my apartment (with the train). I woke up that morning, and fell asleep again. An hour later, I realized that my flight would leave soon so I was really rushing, and got myself and things ready within 30 minutes. An hour later, I arrived in the airport and still had to take the Sky Train to the Terminal and still had to get my boarding pass, which only left me 30 minutes until boarding time. The problem was that the airport was way too full. Each person would have to stand in line for the security check for about an hour and I did not have time for than anymore so I literally had to beg so many people if I could go first because my flight to Poland would leave in a few minutes. Of course, I got angry reactions from these people but I had no other choice so I just did it. After going through the security gate, I ran all the way to the boarding gate. Luckily, I was able to get my flight (I was the last passenger and when I went in the plane, everyone was already seated).
4. Spending Too Much in Warsaw, Poland
I know what you're thinking. My Poland trip was kind of hectic, I have to admit that. Not arriving earlier at the airport and spending too much in the city does sound very irresponsible, and those were my mistakes. Normally, I am not a shopaholic but during this trip, everything was just so cheap that I had to get more. The food was very affordable so I ended up eating in restaurants the whole time, which in total resulted to so much money being spent as well. I was in Poland for 4 days & 3 nights so just imagine eating in restaurants every meal of the day. In addition to that, I also bought a few shirts, too many souvenirs for friends & family, and make-up. I was walking around the mall and to my (dis)advantage, they had a Mac Cosmetics Outlet and all my friends know I love Mac, so I just really had to go in and bought myself a new mascara and lipstick which was pretty expensive considering I was on a budget-trip. I know, irresponsible.
5. Eating Too Much in Morocco
You got it right, I ended up having an upset stomach. The food there was great but my stomach just did not cooperate with it and the ingredients. At first, I wanted to about the food in Morocco but I got super hungry during the whole city trip to Marrakesh that I decided against it and just ate. After eating twice in 2 different restaurants in Marrakesh, I had an intense stomachache that I didn't feel like doing anything anymore the next few hours.
6. Not Wearing Sun Screen in the Philippines
My friends and I decided to go island-hopping for a whole day. I was super excited to do it but when we were on the boat itself, I realized that I forgot my sun screen and I am telling you, do not ever do this. I just enjoyed the day anyway and when I arrived home, I was already peeling and very red everywhere. It also stung every time someone touched my shoulders and nose. I couldn't sleep well during the night. What a disaster...
7. Arriving at the Airport 9 Hours Before My Flight Back Home
When I left for Poland, I arrived too late at the airport and leaving Poland, I decided to arrive early at the airport. My flight would leave very early in the morning so instead of sleeping in the hostel, getting myself ready and leaving super early, I decided to just sleep in the airport. Worst mistake ever. First, I could not sleep well. The chairs were mostly metal and it was too cold for the skin and too hard for my head. Although there were only a few people, I did not feel comfortable there at all. I was able to sleep though but just for about 2 hours. I woke up 2 hours before my flight and was already at the boarding gate so I decided to eat while waiting 2 more hours for the boarding gate to open.
8. Went To Amsterdam, Netherlands With Less Than 100€
It may sound nice to be able to spend lesser money in an expensive city but I am telling you, I regret bringing that amount. It was the most spontaneous trip I have ever done. My friends and I just decided to do it 5 hours before leaving and we were all basically broke. Each of us had around 100€ and we ´all still had to pay for the hotel room. Since we were on a tight budget, we all decided to sleep in one hotel room. So it was a double room with one double bed just for 2 people but we were 4 in there. We also still had to pay for gas, food, drinks, souvenirs, and other necessities so we all went home with close to nothing in our pockets. Nevertheless, I did not regret anything because we had so much fun during the whole trip!
